My difficult transition to remote work changed my life
When the pandemic hit, none of us were ready for our lives to be completely flipped upside down, and many of us struggled with what was a complete lifestyle change. I know I certainly did.
Transitioning to fully remote
Before the pandemic, I was never at home. I was always out and about trying to squeeze in as much as I could into my day. After work, I'd work on personal projects for a few hours and then go to the gym. On weekends, I would make plans to catch up with friends. I really only went home to sleep. This was in part because I didn't have the best living situation - I lived in a converted living room (because SF prices) with 3 strangers who had nothing in common and rarely talked to each other.
All of a sudden, I found myself trapped in that converted living room 24/7. On top of that, my work day was now completely filled with meetings with no time to actually get work done (these were all mandatory "video on" meetings too). This meant I was forced to work longer hours if I wanted to make my deadlines. By the end of the day, I was so mentally exhausted that I didn't have the time or energy to do much else.
Being stuck inside was really starting to hurt my mental health. I lost my drive and passion and lost touch with so many of my friends. I didn't feel like myself anymore. It's actually the reason why I decided to leave SF and go on a solo road trip - I needed to rediscover my passions and purpose. And I'm glad that I did, because that trip changed my life in so many ways.
Why I joined Pesto
It was during this trip that I discovered Pesto. When Doug told me why he and Vivek had created Pesto, their story immediately resonated with me. When they had first transitioned from in-office to fully remote (pre-pandemic), they had also struggled with loneliness. They wanted to create a product that would help remote workers feel more connected with their team. After hearing their story, I felt this sense of what I can only describe as catharsis. These were people who understood what I had felt and were actually doing something to help other people get out of that rut. For the first time in a long time, I finally felt like I had a purpose. I wanted to help build this company whose goal is to improve the quality of life for people everywhere.
Doug walked me through all the fun features that Pesto has and the thought behind adding each one. I was amazed at how much intention and care went into every feature that they add to the product. I loved the "make work fun" attitude that Doug and Vivek have instilled into Pesto. From the cute avatars to the fun team games to the cool integrations, Pesto is really doing some awesome stuff!
I've been at Pesto for about 6 months now, and I'm so happy to be part of this team! Everyone on the team is so excited and passionate about working on the product. I know companies say this all the time, but this is the first time I've ever seen a company where every employee is truly passionate about what they're doing. I feel so blessed to be part of the Pesto team. Working at Pesto has really changed my perspective on working from home. Before, I hated working from home and it felt more like a punishment than anything. But now, I finally see all the benefits of working from home and it really has improved my own quality of life. So much has changed in such a short period of time and I never imagined I would be where I am today - but everything happens for a reason.
